Matins
From the honored halls of classical music comes a new voice, adding its soul and power to an old theme. MATINS continues the tradition of Jesuit Music for meditation begun by LAUDS and VESPERS, inspired by both the sounds of chamber music and the stirrings of the Spirit.
MATINS takes its name from the Office of Readings, the prayer of the afternoon, in which the theme of God's love and enduring presence in the world emerges from different selections from Scripture. In the same way, MATINS draws together diverse voices and textures, of viola and guitar, cello and flute, bass and violin, to bring those who hear to prayer.
For this first offering, MATINS revisits traditional Christmas carols and familiar Jesuit Christmas songs and carols, bringing new flavor to the joy of Christmas. From such composers as Father Eddie Hontiveros and Manoling Francisco, Scholastic Arnel Aquino, and even laity like Norman Agatep, Jandi Arboleda and Paulo Tirol, the songs from MATINS invite those who would believe to enter the stables of their hearts and there find the answer to all their longings.
