From The Pastors Desk...

We are talking about prayer. I have mentioned that prayer is not the manipulation of God, but rather a personal surrender in faith and trust that changes me and makes me available to God's work of justice, the kingdom and the building of the Church.

There is a paper called QUEEN OF PEACE which takes our greatest prayer the Eucharist, and makes a travesty of the Mass as a prayer. It's Summer 1997 Edition is all about the Eucharist, but as an expectation of miracles-it focuses on every event historically from the middle Ages to now where it can allege people tasting blood or the host bleeding, etc.

The Eucharist is beyond this misguided attempt to define the real presence of Jesus . It is only by faith that we know that Jesus is really present, not by alleged miracles of the real presence.

The Eucharist nurtures a miracle, but not the cheap and tawdry ones alleged in this paper. The miracle is the miracle of love, the change of heart, mind and lifestyle.

I do not look for "bloody" or "fleshly" manifestations to know the Eucharist we celebrate is authentic; I look for people who change and become servants of the rest, who do the corporal and spiritual works of mercy; who gather the stranger, support the poor and share their talents and resources with others. Those who are always running after miracles develop a very self-centered life and distort the meaning of prayer and the Eucharist. To pray for such miracles as are described in that summer Edition of the paper to make prayer a guarantee of God's presence as a manifestation of the unusual and bizarre. The real presence of Jesus is available for all who came in faith so that God can make us all more present to each other.

Happy new Year!!

With the first Sunday of Advent we begin another Church year, and so we say Happy New Year. The Church Year" and "liturgical year" is a very ancient phrase. We begin these four weeks in anticipation of the Birth of Jesus. The first two Sundays of Advent focus chiefly on the second coming of Christ; an attitude of vigilance and expectation. The third Sunday will be joyful knowing the coming is soon. The fourth Sunday is very clear - it is a preparation for "The Incarnation of the Word."

We also begin a new cycle - we call it Cycle C. This year we will walk our Journey of Faith with the Gospel writer - Luke. From this Sunday until November of '98 Luke the Gospel writer will walk us step by step, week by week through the life of Jesus. (More to come on Luke the Gospel writer).

Advent Wreath

The Advent wreath is a popular aid to living the spirit of Advent during the four weeks before Christmas. It can be used effectively in the home, at school, or in church. A simple circle of greens with four candles, it symbolizes the truths of God we wish our children to be aware of as Christmas approaches. The circle has always been a symbol of God: no beginning, no end, everlasting. The greens of pine, balsam, holly or boxwood symbolize God's ever-presence, as well as being the Church's color of hope and new life. Four candles symbolize the centuries of waiting for the Savior experienced by God's chosen people.

St. Andrew Conference SVDP

Your generosity has allowed St. Vincent de Paul to feed 44 families, 165+ people , 90 of which are children, this Thanksgiving. We thank all who contributed and encourage all efforts to replenish our depleted food supplies. We are now especially in need of pasta's and canned fruit. Thank You For Your Support!!!!!!

Second Collection

This weekend will be the fifth Sunday of the month and the second collection will be donated to the St. Andrew Conference, SVDP. Please remember us. Let us pray that God will bless our endeavors to help each other.

"The St. Vincent de Paul Society is seeking towels, blankets, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, etc., for the homeless during the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas season. We expect more people to be on the streets this winter due to limitations imposed on the number of beds available in the emergency shelters set up in the local National Guard Armories, so there will be a critical need for these articles. You can either hand deliver your donations to our office located at 50 North "B" Street, San Mateo, or call us at 343-4405 and we will arrange pick up at your residence".

The Tree Of Life For Advent

We invite you to take an Angel from our Advent Tree of Life. We are so blessed with our gifts of God that we ask you to take an angel and buy a gift for the person indicated on your angel. Please bring the gift unwrapped by the fourth Sunday of Advent (December 21). If you are buying a toy, please be sure that it is a non violent toy - not guns or violent "people".
