St. Andrew Parish
Mission Statement

We are many parts of the Body of Christ.

We are Christ's eyes and ears.
We see and hear the spiritual, moral, emotional,
social and economic hungers and needs
of God's diverse people.

We are Christ's heart,
moved with compassion, mercy and love
by the brokenness we see and hear.

We are Christ's voice,
speaking words of wisdom, love encouragement,
hope and joy to all God's people,
and prophetically challenging the people
and structures that cause brokenness.

We are Christ's hands,
gifted in many ways to reach out
and heal the brokenness of God's people.

We are Christ's feet,
journeying as one broken body,
bringing about the kingdom of God
in our corner of Daly City...
and beyond!

History of St. Andrew's Catholic Community

In the summer of 1968, the Archdiocese of San Francisco decided, with the projected population expansion in Daly City, that a new parish should be established. People from Holy Angels, Our Lady of Mercy, and Mater Dolorosa gathered in these early days following the Second Vatican Council, and St. Andrew's Catholic Community was born.

The first Mass celebrated by the was in the multi-use room of the Daniel Webster School on El Dorado Avenue. As the new parish attracted more people, our celebrations were held in the gymnasium of Westmoor High School for Sundays Liturgies.

In 1971, a hardware store in the St. Francis Shopping Center became available, and on June 11 of that year the first Mass was celebrated in our (rented!) store-front church.

Finally, on November 30, 1975, after much fund-raising and work, our new St. Andrew's Church - in the shape of St. Andrew's Cross - was dedicated by Archbishop McGucken and the first Mass was celebrated.

Our current pastor, Fr. Frank Piro, is the third pastor of St. Andrew's. He succeeded our second pastor, Fr. John Cloherty, in 1983. Our first and founding pastor was Fr. James Moher.

But the history of a parish is much more than the story of its building and pastors. The history of a parish is the story of people, many people working hard to bring about a dream. St. Andrew Parish is the story of a great many people, living in harmony while rejoicing in their diversity. Anglos of many ethnic backgrounds, Filipinos, Blacks, Hispanics, other Asians, and more worked to build a church from groups of loosely connected individuals. Some of those early workers are still here; others have taken their God-given gifts and moved to other places. We are the beneficiaries of all who have gone before us, and we in turn, pass on our own giftedness to those who follow after.

The history of St. Andrew's Parish is short, but is continuing and we are all part of that history.
